How to Ensure Your Office Workstations & Desks are Ergonomic

Anyone who spends a lot of time in front of a computer should give some thought to making their workstation ergonomic. Sitting at a computer all day is something that many people have to do, and while it may seem like a fairly safe activity, in many cases people aren’t sitting correctly and don’t have workstations, desks, chairs, monitors and other items arranged in a correct manner, which can result in straining and injury.

To improve health in the workplace and reduce the chances of aninjury or strain occurring while sitting at your computer, it’s important to take a closer look at workstations & desks and arrange them in an ergonomic manner. This article will look at some main areas of concern in regards to creating an ergonomic working environment.

Chair Position

When creating an ergonomic workstation, the first thing to look at is the chair position. Firstly, it’s important to make sure that you’re using a quality chair that allows for good posture and blood circulation and that also lets your arms comfortably rest in a good position for typing. Secondly, the chair should be comfortable. After all, you’ll be spending a lot of time in it, and when you’re comfortable, you’ll be much more productive and feel better during the day.

There are many ergonomic chairs available nowadays, and investing in one that has arm rests and is fully adjustable can really pay off, as using a chair that improves your posture is a great way to avoid injury. In regards to chair height, your chair should be adjusted so that your feet remain flat on the floor, as a seat that is too high or too low can result in strain being put on the lower back muscles.

Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor Position

Workstations & desks can be adorned with a number of different office items, but you’ll be hard pressed to find many without a keyboard and mouse. These two items are essential for anyone performing computer tasks, but often they are positioned poorly and are one of the main causes of unnecessary office injury. Even though there are many ergonomic mouse and keyboard products on the market that are designed to reduce strain on the fingers and wrists, these still have to be set up correctly in order to provide maximum benefit.

When using your keyboard and mouse, you should ideally position yourself so that your elbows are resting by your sides and your forearms are positioned parallel to the floor. Using a mouse and keyboard that have been set up poorly with workstations & desks can over time result in carpal tunnel syndrome, which in turn can lead to loss of feeling and strength in the hands due to damage to nerves in the wrists. For this reason, positioning everything correctly is of the utmost importance. It’s also important to make sure that the monitor you use is positioned at eye level and is not placed too close to your face, as this can result in visual fatigue and neck strains.
